At Under One Sky, we are committed to empowering a healthy and proud Indigenous community that celebrates and embraces all Indigenous peoples and cultures in the spirit of trust, respect and friendship through culturally safe and relevant programs and services. Our programs focus on fostering connections, strengthening relationships and revitalization our beautiful cultures.

Early Childhood Education

  • Our Aboriginal Head Start (AHS) program is a community based grassroots early intervention program that serves urban Indigenous children and their families. Our program aims to help children succeed and grow socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually through language, culture and traditions while creating a positive sense of self as an Indigenous person.

  • Our innovative Take it Outside (TIO) program uses discovery based learning activities in the outdoors for preschool aged children attending Aboriginal Head Start Programs. By bringing children into the natural environment and orienting learning towards a strengths and discovery based format, Take it Outside builds the capacity of parents/families and children to be more confident and excited to be in the outdoors and do things in their environment comfortably.

Monthly Programming

  • Our Community Crafting Circle is a welcoming space where individuals of all skill levels can come together to explore their artistic side! Whether you're into knitting, painting, beading, scrapbooking, or any other craft, this is your chance to work on projects, share ideas, and connect with others in a relaxed, supportive environment. No need to sign up—just drop in, bring your supplies (or use what's available), and let your creativity flow! Perfect for anyone looking to unwind, learn something new, or just enjoy some crafting time with others.

    Starting March 2025, join us the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 5-8PM!

  • Our Two-Spirited teatime is a safe space to gather dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for Two-Spirit individuals and allies. This space encourages open dialogue, mutual respect, and the celebration of diverse gender identities and expressions. This monthly gathering fosters understanding, connection, and empowerment for all participants, ensuring that everyone feels valued, heard, and accepted. Whether you're exploring your identity or seeking solidarity, this safe space invites all to share, learn, and grow together.

    Starting March 2025, join us the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6:00-8:00PM.

Workshops

  • Cultural awareness and cultural safety practices are vital components in fostering understanding and respect for diverse cultures, including Indigenous communities. These workshops aim to enhance individuals' understanding of cultural differences, historical contexts, and the impacts of colonization and systemic discrimination on Indigenous peoples and their communities.

  • Land Based Learning is an opportunity to teach and learn cultural knowledge and language through direct experience of being “on the land” while encouraging confidence in the outdoors for children, staff and families. These experiences are not only meaningful but reconnect us to many aspects of traditional living.

Food Security

  • Under One Sky is a Community Food Smart (CFS) Distributor. CFS is a bulk food buying club for individuals and families keen on purchasing quality fruits and vegetables at affordable prices, sourced from local farmers when possible.

  • Hayes Farm is a gem right inside the city of Fredericton's Devon neighborhood. They are a community-led project that aims to inspire and mobilize New Brunswickers toward a resilient and thriving food system by providing them with the skills, expertise and support to practice human-scale regenerative agriculture. They do this in the spirit of honoring Indigenous culture and food ways, integrative principles of land-based learning, and reconnection.

Youth Programming

  • Creating Connections is a vibrant community dedicated to empowering Indigenous youth through cultural connection, skill-building, and leadership development. Our program offers a safe space for youth to explore their heritage, engage in traditional practices, and participate in educational workshops and mentorship opportunities.

    We welcome youth aged 13-17 from all Indigenous backgrounds to join us in celebrating our rich heritage and shaping a positive future. Together, let’s build a strong, supportive community that inspires growth and resilience.

Culture and Language

  • People of all levels of skill and experience are encouraged to join us to learn how to create and care for traditional Indigenous instruments, attend regular music gatherings such as drop-in drumming where we share song, language and traditional dances.

  • If you have ever wanted to learn the beautiful Wəlastəkwey language, Under One Sky is proud to offer the Skicinowato Language Program with Kelsey Nash-Solomon. Kelsey is passionate about language and sharing it with others through fun class lessons, drumming and songs.

  • Maoi Ginaamasoltinej Mi'kmaq is a brand new Mi'kmaq language pilot program hosted here at Under One Sky with Brigitta Francis. Over the course of 10 weeks, students will learn some basics of the Mi'kmaq language in a culturally safe environment with the goal of being able to communicate more effectively with the Mi'kmaq community. This course is meant for you with its main motto being, let's all learn together, because we all have something to contribute.

Social Supports

  • Our Sakələməlsowakən Family Wellness Program is grounded in Indigenous worldviews, is family focused, and incorporates traditional practices such as Elder guidance, language, and culture. Services include Indigenous Nursing Outreach, Healing Spaces Mental Health Counselling, Indigenous Nurse Practitioner Services and Jordan's Principle Support.

  • Under One Sky has partnered with Indigenous Services Canada as a Trusted Source to provide intakes for Secure Certificate of Indian Status Cards. This is a free service provided through Under One Sky Friendship Centre. The application will be sent to Indigenous Services Canada and the card can take up to 6 months to arrive.

  • Under One Sky’s Nurturing Roots Project focuses on developing culturally safe programs and supports for children with exceptional needs and their families. Through consultations with families, teachers, resource teams, EA’s, behavioral technicians and support workers, Nurturing Roots is committed to providing our community with culturally safe supports.
